Stateless system a la Clear

Having used Clearlinux a while, i had an admiration on how it separated user configurations from upstream. It made resets easier and easier to discover which modifications are currently in place from the base distro. If i am not mistaken, the BDFL was part of the team that created the distro. I am of the understanding that serpent will make clever use of hardlinks internally, will it be possible to have a clean /etc and all the links in /usr when packaging? I suspect this will require a lot of packaging effort for a return that might or might not be worth it for users. Does the serpent os architecture make this easier to implement?

You would be right in assuming we're gunning for stateless. Our .stone packages can only contain files under /usr, and we're looking to be fully stateless before leaving alpha. I wouldn't say the architecture necessarily makes it Easier - more mandatory 🙂

I am definitely interested in the statelessness aspects of Serpent OS and I am trying to figure out how I can help with that right now:-)

I am currently bastardizing arch linux into an immutable and stateless OS (repo, a huge mess of python scripts that produce dm-verity backed arch linux installations).

Serpent OS could become a much better basis for what I am doing (maybe I can even sneak some of my ideas in;-).

There's always a strong need for people who can write stateless patches for new packages as well as update and improve existing patches.
