Performance also matters.
As Ikey said, the design of moss allows us to be less focused on the underlying FS and its features, essentially making the FS orthogonal to the tech of moss.
As I see it, this is very a desirable property, because it means that we can let the users who want/need something else than the (conservative?) defaults just go do their thing without getting in their way.
